Colombia scored in the late stages to earn a 1-1 draw with ten-player Korea Republic in their final Group D contest at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Uruguay 2018 in Colonia Del Sacramento.

The first half was a fairly open affair at the Estadio Alberto Suppici, with the Koreans opening the scoring on 14 minutes from the penalty spot after Chun Garam was tripped just inside the Colombia box by Kelly Caicedo. Cho Mijin struck her spot-kick under Colombia goalkeeper Michell Lugo for the Asian side’s first goal at Uruguay 2018.

The South Americans had faint hopes of making the quarter-finals, but a win on Wednesday was required to make that a possibility. Gisela Robledo tried to pull the Colombians back on level terms with two clear scoring opportunities, but Korea Republic goalkeeper Kim Sujeong was equal to her efforts. At the other end, Lugo needed to intervene to deny Gwak Royeong scoring a second Korean goal before the break.

The second half proved rather uneventful until the late stages. It started with the Koreans being reduced to ten players when Lee Eunyoung was shown a second yellow card on 89 minutes.

Then in stoppage time, Colombia levelled the match when Maria Reyes’s free-kick from the left found its way to Robledo at the far post. Her first-time finish found the back of the net to earn the Colombians a draw, as both sides bowed out of the competition in the group stages.
