Mo’s road to the FIFA eWorld Cup title

  • 'MoAuba' is the new FIFA eWorld Cup champion

  • German had to navigate formidable opposition to win title

  • Take a look back at his path to global glory

Thirty-two players started on Friday morning and come end of play on Sunday, only one stood standing: FIFA eWorld Cup champion ‘MoAuba’.

Going into the tournament as the PlayStation No5 seed, the Werder Bremen man claimed his first global title and also made an additional bit of history by becoming the first German to win the Grand Final.

What makes Mo’s achievement all the more remarkable, though, is the formidable opposition he had to overcome to get his hand on the trophy - particularly in the knockout stage.

“I think I had the hardest bracket in the history of FIFA,” he said in an interview with FIFA.com after his global triumph. FIFA.com looks back at Mo’s road to the FIFA eWorld Cup title.

Day One

‘MoAuba’ got his eWorld Cup campaign off to a strong start by ending Day One atop of the tightly-contested Group C. The German’s confidence was high after he stormed to victory in his first four games against PlayStation giants ‘Tore’, ‘Tuga’, ‘LevVinken’ and ‘DrErhano’ before losing his final game of the day against ‘Ustun’.

Despite the loss, Mo still ended the day top of the pile. When asked about the possibility of going all the way on the opening day, the eventual champion initially played down his chances.

"I don’t expect that a German will finally win the Grand Final because we have very hard opponents like ‘Tekkz’, ‘Dossary’ and 'Nicolas99fc',” he said at the time. “But with a little bit of luck, maybe we can get it."

Day Two

While ‘MoAuba’ might have started Day Two slow, losing his first two matches against ‘Nicolas99fc’ and ‘Marko’, and thus finishing third as Group C came to a close, the ever-smiling fan-favourite made a huge statement in the knockouts.

First up was last year’s PlayStation champion ‘Pinna97’ who was dispatched 3-1 on aggregate before the Werder Bremen player sent out a huge message to the rest of the competition by comfortably beating FIFA eNations Cup winner ‘Maestro’ 5-1 in the quarter-finals.

"I’ve been here two times before and both times I finished in the top four. Now, I’m in console final,” he told FIFA.com after close of play on Day Two. “It’s a great feeling. I’m really happy. I’m playing ‘Nicolas99fc’ and I feel like I have nothing to lose because it’s ‘Nicolas99fc’. If I win, it will be a surprise and even then I would have to play the Final Showdown against ‘Rafsou’ or ‘MsDossary’ who are big names."

Day Three

Mo looked like he had one foot in the Final Showdown after his 4-1 victory in the first leg of his semi-final against ‘Nicolas99fc’. ‘The Iceman’, however, produced a stunning comeback in the second leg and forced the game to extra time after a late goal secured him a 4-1 victory.

Extra time then went to penalties and ‘MoAuba’, who had long waited to record a victory over ‘Nicolas99fc’, showed his tournament know-how by earning a shoot-out win.

Buoyed by his victory over the PlayStation No1, Mo’s biggest test came in the final against none other than defending champion ‘MsDossary’.

A draw over the Saudi Arabian on his preferred console gave Mo a firm upper hand going into the second leg – and the German finished off the job, winning the PlayStation side of the final 2-1.

“I played the third, second, and first-ranked players in the world in PlayStation, and then I had to play against the current holder," he said. "I beat all these champions and I can’t believe it.”
