Lyon successfully defended their UEFA Women’s Champions League title following a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Paris Saint-Germain in the first all-French final in Cardiff, Wales, on Thursday evening.

Two hours of goalless action failed to separate the sides at the Cardiff City Stadium, leading to spot-kicks to decide which French side would be crowned the top club in European women’s football. It was Lyon goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi that converted the winning penalty in sudden death after PSG’s Polish shot-stopper Katarzyna Kiedrzynek missed the target with her spot-kick.

The first half saw Bouhaddi makes two fine saves for Lyon, who lost the services of USA striker Alex Morgan midway through the opening period through injury. Each side had a chance to claim the match winner after the break, but Lyon’s Ada Hegerberg could not convert her opportunity shortly after the restart, while Marie-Laure Delie put a shot just wide of the target for PSG’s best opportunity of the second half.

A further 30 minutes of play brought no end result and it was Lyon - and Bouhaddi in particular - that held their nerve in the shoot-out to lift the trophy for a second straight year.

It is Lyon’s record-equalling fourth Women’s Champions League crown, having previously won the title in 2011, 2012, and 2016. As for PSG, it is more heartache after falling short in a second final appearance in the competition.
