USA win sixth Gold Cup title

  • USA win sixth CONCACAF Gold Cup title

  • Jordan Morris the hero for the Stars and Stripes with late winner

  • Jamaica goalkeeper Andre Blake leaves match early with hand injury USA are champions of CONCACAF for the sixth time after a well-deserved 2-1 victory over Jamaica in the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2017 on Wednesday evening.

Jordan Morris’s late strike earned the Stars and Stripes victory at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, this after Jamaica’s Je-Vaughn Watson had initially cancelled out Jozy Altidore’s first-half strike for a USA side that dominated the match throughout.

It was from the game’s first chance on 19 minutes that a key moment in the contest occurred. After making a fantastic save from Altidore’s long-distance drive, Jamaica goalkeeper Andre Blake suffered a hand injury after denying USA’s Kellyn Acosta from scoring on the rebound. The injury was serious enough to force the distraught Reggae Boyz captain out of the match, as back-up Dwayne Miller came on in his place.

Just before half-time, the Americans were awarded with a free-kick near the edge of the Jamaica box. Altidore stepped up to strike a powerful, curling effort past the Reggae Boyz wall and a sprawling Miller for a 1-0 USA lead at the break.

That advantage lasted until five minutes after the restart, as Watson equalised for the brave Jamaicans with a far-post finish from a well-hit Kemar Lawrence corner.

It prompted Bruce Arena’s charges to pursue a second goal, but Miller proved difficult to beat in the Jamaica goal after he denied Morris and substitute Clint Dempsey in the second half.

However, the USA’s pressure finally paid off in the late stages, as Morris drilled home the winning goal with his right foot after Jamaica failed to clear Gyasi Zardes’s cross from the right.

The stat 3 – With Wednesday’s victory over Jamaica, USA’s Bruce Arena became the most successful coach in CONCACAF Gold Cup history with three titles to his name.

What they said “It’s amazing. A lot of guys put in a lot of work, and I thought we deserved it. It’s my first time winning a trophy for the United States. I’m just so proud and excited.”  USA goalscorer Jozy Altidore speaking after their 2-1 win over Jamaica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2017 final
