Portugal secured their second win of the Men's Olympic Football Tournament, and strengthened their position in Group D, following a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Honduras in Rio de Janeiro's Olympic Stadium. Alberth Elis opened the scoring for Los Catrachos after just 30 seconds, before Tobias Figueiredo and Goncalo Paciencia's first-half efforts turned the tie on its head.

A remarkable opening to the game saw Honduras stun the vast majority of those backing Portugal in the stadium into silence. Direct play down the left hand side by Romell Quioto saw the No12 whip a superb ball across the face of goal, with Elis there to fire home. It equals Oribe Peralta's record in the 2012 gold medal match as the fastest goal in the Men's Olympic Football Tournament.

The lively Quioto then made space for himself on the edge of the Portuguese penalty area before firing at goal, but his shot was well stopped by Bruno Varela.

Joge Luis Pinto's side then dropped deeper, in an effort to consolidate their position. But it was in vain, due to a lapse in concentration in the Honduran defence. A short corner from the Portuguese right was worked to Sergio Oliveira, whose deep cross was headed home emphatically by Figueiredo.

Portugal then had a remarkable chance to take the lead, with Salvador Agra's touch too heavy in attempting to round Luis Lopez, having found himself one-on-one with the Honduras goalkeeper after springing the offside trap.

The Hondurans did not heed that warning, and were behind soon after. Bruno Fernandes hit a hopeful shot from the edge of the penalty area which rather fortuitously deflected right into the path of Paciencia, who calmly slotted past Lopez.

Rui Jorge's side were even more determined to impose themselves after the break, with a succession of quickfire shots peppering down on Lopez's goal, before Paciencia's final effort was smartly stopped by the Honduran No1.

Los Catrachos' stopper was then on hand to save Allans Vargas from embarrassment, tipping wide a header from his own defender which seemed destined for the bottom corner.

The result sees Portugal all-but book a place in the last eight, as they await the outcome of Argentina's match against Algeria later this evening. Honduras face ​La Albiceleste ​on the final Group D matchday, with the Portuguese up against the Algerians.
