Jordan will go into knockout stage play as group winners at the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 having conceded zero goals, following their goalless draw with Palestine.

Elsewhere in Group B, holders Australia won a five-goal thriller against Syria thanks to a Tom Rogic strike in stoppage time.

Australia 3-2 Syria, Group B Khalifa bin Zayed Stadium, Al Ain

Australia and Syria’s first-ever encounter at the Asian Cup was one to remember as the two sides played out a five-goal, back-and-forth thriller that saw the Socceroos edge it after late heroics from Rogic.

Awer Mabil opened the scoring with a terrific, curling left-footed effort from the edge of the penalty area that found the far corner. However, Syria hit back almost immediately when birthday boy Omar Khrbin levelled from close range after his initial header was blocked by Australia goalkeeper Mat Ryan.

The Socceroos regained the lead shortly after the break when Rogic found Chris Ikonomidis at the far post with a defence-splitting low cross and the winger did just enough to guide his effort over the line. But Syria bounced back once again as Omar Al Soma was adjudged to have been brought down in the penalty area. He picked himself up and converted the resulting spot-kick to bring his side level.

Rogic had the last word, though, as the Celtic midfielder scored the winning goal from just over 20 yards out with a stunning strike that beat goalkeeper Ibrahim Alam and guaranteed the holders’ progression to the knockout stage and sending Syria home.

Palestine 0-0 Jordan, Group B Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi

Neighbours Jordan and Palestine played to a goalless draw in Abu Dhabi, which meant the Jordanians finished the group at the summit having impressively conceded zero goals throughout their group campaign. The result was a marked improvement for the Palestinians as their last meeting with Jordan at the continental showpiece saw them suffer a heavy 5-1 loss.

The table-toppers were on the front foot from the start but that did not prevent Palestine from keeping Jordan captain Amer Shafi busy. Shafi had to make a save on Abdallatif Al Bahdari’s flicked effort early on. Shafi made another crucial save from Al Bahdari’s header in the second half, which was then followed up by a long-range strike from Jordan’s Ahmed Ersan, stinging the palms of Palestine goalkeeper Rami Hamada.

Jordan will now prepare for their Round of 16 contest with the third-placed side from either Group C, D or E in Dubai, while Palestine are made to wait to learn their fate.
