France 2019 is just eight short days away and everyone, it seems, is expecting the best FIFA Women’s World Cup to date.
But when it comes to goals, the upcoming showpiece will do well to match the quality on show four years ago. Canada 2015 set a new standard in that respect, raising the bar with a dazzling variety of strikes to suit all tastes.
For fans of flowing team moves, there was a typically slick Japan goal to admire, with Mizuho Sakaguchi rounding off a passage of intricate flicks and dummies.
Set-piece aficionados, meanwhile, would have been wowed by the cleverly executed free-kick from Norway's Maren Mjelde against Germany. And for those who simply love a powerful, purely struck long-range effort, Amandine Henry’s 30-yard thunderbolt and Daniela Montoya’s unstoppable drive off the underside of the bar would surely have left you drooling.
Then, of course, there was the small matter of a goal from halfway. To seal a hat-trick. In the Final. Take another bow, Carli Lloyd.
These moments are a reminder of the lofty standards France 2019 and its players will be tasked with meeting, and hopefully surpassing. For the rest of us, it whets the appetite for the action about to unfold.
