Delabre hat-trick leads France to Group A summit

A first-half hat-trick from Amelie Delabre and a superb goal from Emelyne Laurent saw France defeat the Netherlands 4-0 to finish top of Group A, sealing the hosts’ place in the quarter-finals at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018.

Although the Dutch started the match strongly, it was France who opened the scoring ten minutes in when Delabre skillfully guided in a shot after a pass from Carla Polito.

Les Bleuettes were then awarded a penalty when Laurent was fouled in the area by Eva van Deursen and Delabre stepped up and put away her spot-kick for her second of the match.

Delabre completed her hat-trick just two minutes later, latching on to the end of a cross from Laurent and heading past Oranje goalkeeper Lize Kop.

Goalscoring chances were few and far between in the second half, with the Netherlands forced to try and find a way back into the match.

It was a moment of individual brilliance from Laurent that gave the French their fourth goal on the day. She used her pace and trickery to dribble past Aniek Nouwen before calmly slotting in a shot with her right foot past Kop.

The result sees France finish top of the group, while the Netherlands finish in second place, with both teams advancing to the last eight. New Zealand and Ghana are eliminated from the competition.
