Historic Wisnewski strike leads Kiwis to bronze
New Zealand ensured their historic performance at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Uruguay 2018 was capped off with a podium finish after a 2-1 victory over Canada in the match for third place.
With just 15 seconds on the clock, Wisnewski scored the fastest goal in U-17 Women's World Cup history. New Zealand's high press from kick-off caught Canada off guard and Wisnewski was alert, tapping in from close range after Maggie Jenkins stole possession from Canada goalkeeper Anna Karpenko.
Wisnewksi then doubled the Kiwis' lead 12 minutes later with a fine volley from about 20 yards out hit over the head of a leaping Karpenko, after running on to Jenkins' excellently-placed lay-off.
Lara Kazandjian brought Canada back to within one goal in the 64th minute when she evaded New Zealand substitute Maya Hahn before driving a well-placed shot into the far corner past Kiwis keeper Anna Leat and into the bottom corner.
Canada continued to push for an equaliser, creating a number of scoring opportunities, but just as they did against Japan in the quarter-finals, New Zealand held on to ultimately get the result and claim the bronze medal.
