The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is getting closer – 58 days to go!

In two months' time – on 14 June, to be precise – the 21st FIFA World Cup™ kicks off at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium, as the hosts take on Saudi Arabia.​

That leaves us plenty of time to enjoy a countdown. Between now and the start of the World Cup, we will take a closer look at a different statistic from the history of the tournament each day.​

58 The number of brothers who have played at the FIFA World Cup. Among the most famous of them are Germany’s Ottmar and Fritz Walter, who helped West Germany win the Trophy at Switzerland 1954, and Bobby and Jack Charlton, who did likewise for England on home soil in 1966. The World Cup has even been graced on occasion by twins, with Frank and Ronald de Boer appearing together for the Netherlands at USA 1994 and France 1998, while fellow Dutch pair Willy and Rene van de Kerkhof were part of the Oranje squads that lost in the Finals at Germany 1974 and Argentina 1978.

South Africa 2010 saw two brothers face off against each other, as Jerome and Kevin-Prince Boateng ran out for Germany and Ghana respectively, the match ending in a 1-0 win for Die Mannschaft. Remarkably, the Boateng boys locked horns once again in the group phase at Brazil 2014, when their two nations played out a 2-2 draw.
