France coast into next round

  • France through to Round of 16 with win over ten-man Vietnam

  • Jean-Kevin Augustin scores two after early penalty miss

  • Marcus Thuram and Denis Poha also on the scoresheet

France waltzed into the last 16 of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea Republic 2017 thanks to a 4-0 win over ten-man Vietnam, with Jean-Kevin Augustin getting a brace.

The European champions really should have been in front inside five minutes, but Augustin opted for an audacious 'Panenka' style penalty after Les Bleuets had been awarded a spot kick, seeing it cannon back off the bar. However, they were not left waiting long, as Marcus Thuram rose highest to power a header beyond Tien Dung Bui.

Augustin was then presented with the chance to make amends, laid on by Thuram’s neat through ball, and this time he gobbled up the opportunity gladly. He doubled his tally right on half-time, exchanging passes with Ludovic Blas before thumping France into the break well into the lead.

Denis Poha ended an elegant fourth, Blas again on assist duty, placing his strike over the keeper from 20 yards out. A second yellow for Dinh Trong Tran hardly helped matters for Vietnam, but the margin remained at four.
