The second knockout matchday at the FIFA Women's World Cup France 2019™ once more saw a pulsating game deadlocked after 90 minutes.

Unlike Saturday, which saw Norway eliminate Australia on penalties, the hosts defeated Brazil with an extra time winner. In a game of incredible quality, drama and some outstanding individual skill, Amandine Henry's 107th-minute goal was enough to see off A Seleção after Thaisa had earlier cancelled out Valerie Gauvin's opener. Les Bleues will watch tomorrow's game between Spain and USA with interest - they will face the winner in Paris on Friday.

Earlier, in Valenciennes, England had seen off Cameroon with a 3-0 victory that was far trickier than the scoreline suggested. Warm conditions, along with a tough opponent, meant the English Lionesses had to work hard for their last 16 victory, which came courtesy of goals from Steph Houghton, Ellen White and Alex Greenwood. Phil Neville's side will now face Norway on Thursday in Le Havre.

Laure James (ENG) Resilience, cool heads and patience helped England book their place in the quarter-finals, alongside some clinical finishing. Phil Neville’s players handled a full spectrum of challenges posed by Cameroon, who were a very good side going forward. Jill Scott’s midfield marshalling and Lucy Bronze’s leadership stood out among England’s individual performances, while Ellen White has taken another step towards becoming a Golden Boot contender. England will find areas to improve upon, including minimising sacrificed space in midfield and tightening up at the back. But all that will matter for now is the win.

Cynthia Nzetia (CMR) Coach Alain Djeumfa said on FIFA.com earlier this week: "The teams that are in the quarter-finals are the toughest." England showed what the Indomitable Lionesses need to work on to reach this level in the coming years. The Cameroonians have not been clinical enough this tournament, which is something they'll need to be to fare better in the future. See you in four years, surely stronger.

Emmanuelle Hingant (FRA) Les Bleues told us they had to do more to take advantage when they're on top in games, and also recover the ball better. With that in mind, I'm not sure Corinne Diacre will be entirely happy with this performance. In any case, she tried two systems to counter the Brazilians' attacking play and they worked, even if they needed the brilliant defending of Griedge Mbock to prevent Brazil from scoring a second goal. France had to go through extra time, but they showed their strength and stamina. On to the quarter-finals!

Giancarlo Giampietro (BRA) Brazil were winning the mental game right until France's physicality made the difference in extra time. It's an unfortunate finish for a team that improved during the tournament and gave the impression against France that they could go much further. This may very well be the last run-out for the Marta, Cristiane and Formiga trinity - and those Brazilians should be incredibly proud of their effort.
