Happy new year to you!

2016 has been brought in style in the land of the rising sun. To kick-off the calendar year, members of the Kemari Preservation Society play Kemari, an ancient Japanese ball-lifting game using only the right leg, at the Shimogamo shrine in Kyoto.

The game came from China almost 1,400 years ago and is still played on the first Monday of the new year in the city in the west of Japan with the participants donning traditional costume.
