Tabarez signs four-year contract renewal with Uruguay

The Uruguay Football Association announced that an agreement has been reached between long-time head coach Oscar Tabarez and his staff to continue leading the national team for another four years.

Tabarez and his coaching staff, including Celso Otero, Mario Rebollo and Jose Herrera, take charge for a fifth period. They have been at the helm since March 2006.

During that the last 12 years Tabarez and his staff have led Uruguay to a fourth-place finish at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, a fourth-place finish at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, the Round of 16 at Brazil 2014 and the quarter-finals at Russia 2018 this past summer.

At continental level most notably Tabarez led Uruguay to 2011 Copa America glory, which was their first title in the competition since 1995.

Referred to as El Maestro ("the teacher), Tabarez holds two records as head coach for the Uruguay national team: most matches (185) and most World Cup finals participations (four).

Next up for Uruguay, who are fifth in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, are matches against Korea Republic on 12 October and Japan on 16 October.

In 2019 Tabarez will begin his fifth World Cup qualifying campaign with Uruguay and will lead his country at the Copa America for the sixth time.
