Final-day drama leaves Panama smiling, USA despairing

Panama are headed to their first FIFA World Cup™ following a highly dramatic final day of qualifying in the CONCACAF region which saw USA unexpectedly slip from third to fifth and suffer a shock elimination.

A famous winner two minutes before full time from Roman Torres secured Panama a 2-1 comeback win over Costa Rica and historic passage to the world stage for the first time.

Honduras also came from behind to see off Mexico 3-2 with their winner coming on the hour from Romell Quioto. The three points earned Honduras an intercontinental play-off berth against Australia next month.

Those results meant USA needed a point in Trinidad and Tobago, but the Stars and Stripes fell to a 2-1 defeat and are set to miss their first World Cup since 1986.
