Fiorentina create history with maiden title

  • Fiorentina Women’s FC win maiden Serie A Femminile title in Italy

  • Saturday’s 2-0 win over Tavagnacco secured the Scudetto for La Viola with a game to spare

  • They are the first women’s side in Italy to be part of a men’s Serie A club in ACF Fiorentina

There were scenes of jubilation at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence on Saturday after Fiorentina Women’s FC secured their first-ever Italian Serie A Femminile title with a 2-0 victory over Tavagnacco.

Second-half goals by Patrizia Caccamo and Tatiana Bonetti were enough to secure La Viola their maiden Scudetto, with the club eight points clear of second-placed Brescia with one match remaining in the 2016/17 campaign.

“An incredible feeling,” Fiorentina coach Sauro Fattori told violachannel.tv after Saturday’s win. “I want to share this success with the rest of the coaching staff because we’ve all put in the work right from day one, without ever giving less than 100 per cent. We really do deserve it.”

Fiorentina WFC’s rise to the top of Italian women’s football has been a swift and remarkable journey for a team that was founded in 2015. What makes this season’s achievement an historical one is that Fiorentina are the first women's team in Italy to be part of a professional men's club in the form of Serie A outfit ACF Fiorentina.

There is hope in Italian women’s football circles that the Fiorentina model will be emulated by other men’s Serie A clubs in the near future and that more professional opportunities will develop for the women’s game in Italy, as a result.

As for the current campaign, Fattori’s side have the opportunity to claim a domestic league and cup double, with La Viola in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia later this month. Beforehand, they will conclude their title-winning season on Saturday afternoon away to Res Roma.
