Birthday boy Teikeu in love with Russia

  • Teikeu celebrates his 27th birthday today, Friday

  • The Cameroon defender is a lover of all things Russian

  • A good result against Germany could see him extend his stay in the country

Adolphe Teikeu is more than just Cameroon’s defensive linchpin at the FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017; he is also the Indomitable Lions’ tour guide in Russia, a country he fell in love with as soon as he decided to play his club football there.

"I really like the language and the country and I’m especially fond of Russian cuisine,” said Teikeu, who played for a number of clubs in Ukraine and Russia between 2009 and 2015.

The player turns 27 today. Fittingly, he touched down in the morning with his team-mates in a place close to his heart: the Olympic city of Sochi. “It’s my favourite place in Russia,” he said as he enjoyed a seaside walk with the rest of the Cameroon squad. “I played for Krasnodar, which is not far away, and I used to come here a lot.”

Cameroon have travelled to Sochi to take on Germany in their final match in Group B on Sunday, a game they need to win if they are to reach the semi-finals. Should they extend their stay in Russia, it would be the perfect birthday gift for Teikeu.
