FIFA expresses condolences to victims of incidents at match in El Salvador

  • Incidents happened at the match between Alianza FC and Club Deportivo FAS

  • The match took place at the Cuscatlán Stadium in San Salvador

  • Minute’s silence to be held at FIFA U-20 World Cup matches in Argentina on Sunday

FIFA and its President Gianni Infantino have sent their condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives during the match between Alianza FC and Club Deportivo FAS at the Cuscatlán Stadium in El Salvador.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives after the tragic incidents that have taken place in El Salvador during the match between Alianza FC and Club Deportivo FAS,” the FIFA President said.

“Together with FIFA and the global football community, all our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected, as well as with the people of the Republic of El Salvador, the Concacaf Confederation, the Salvadoran Football Association, and the Primera División de Fútbol de El Salvador, at this difficult time.”

The FIFA President also referenced the tragic incident in his address to the 76th World Health Assembly, which began on Sunday 21 May in Geneva, Switzerland.

FIFA confirmed that one minute’s silence will be held before all four matches on Sunday 21 May at the FIFA U-20 World Cup matches in Argentina. As a mark of respect, the flags of El Salvador and of FIFA and all of the confederations were flown at half-mast at the Home of FIFA in Zurich.
