FIFA eClub World Cup

Holders head home, favourites in the mood

  • First day of eClub World Cup delivers drama aplenty
  • Favourites KiNG eSports on song while holders Brondby out
  • Manchester City and Futbolists also shine

The opening day of action at the FIFA eClub World Cup handed out plenty to get our teeth in across 72 games, so let's dive right in.

Talking points

Champions crash out

They arrived full of confidence and dreaming about an unbelievable hat-trick of eClub World Cup titles, but reigning champions Brondby's domination in the tournament is over. 'Fredberg' and 'Dingo' could not come back after picking up just one point from their opening trio of matches. We'll see a new name added to the roll of honour on Sunday.

Outsiders on top

When people were drawing up their potential winners prior to kick off, few picked out Turkish upstarts Futbolist as one of the frontrunners. However, despite being relative unknowns, ‘Sanchez’ and ‘Isopower’ were not overawed when taking their seat on the global stage, topping Group C. Could they cause a real upset tomorrow?

Favourites find their rhythm

Almost to a man, everyone had KiNG eSports in their eyes as the team arriving as champions in waiting. However, despite 'Tekkz' and 'nicolas99fc' topping the Xbox and PlayStation Global Series Rankings they got off to a sticky start, taking four points from their encounters with ECV eSports. However, once the pair got into their stride, they became almost unstoppable. Six back-to-back wins saw them sail into the quarters.

Group by group

Group A

While Manchester City found their way into the next round with two games to spare thanks in part to a faultless nine points from ‘Shellzz’ in his one v one encounters, all the drama unfolded below them.

Wolverhampton Wanderers looked in full control after taking seven points off Brondby but the Danish duo clawed themselves back into the picture, only to see their hat-trick hopes evaporate in the final game.

“I’m getting my confidence back. It’s been really hard qualifying for these events and after a while when you keep on not qualifying, but now with three wins out of three we’re just going to take it one game at a time going into the next round.”

Group B

Too close to call does not do this group justice. With eight games played, every single side was still in with a shout of finding the next round, with no one guaranteed their spot going into the final two v twos. The pair of 'FaZe Tass' and 'FaZe Lev' showed their pedigree, while Imperial clung on to join them.

"I'm feeling relieved because after the two rounds it was all in our hands but in the third we lost both of the one v ones and we needed to draw or win the last game, so I'm just glad we made it."

Imperial's 'Spiteri' reflects on squeaking into the knockouts.

Group C

While pre-tournament predictions had the likes of big-name veterans Team Vitality earmarked as the leading pair, few expected Futbolist to take control of the proceedings, riding high after coming out on top in some early slender wins.

Meanwhile it was a couple of Vitality loanees who joined them, with Dijon’s ‘Moolzn’ and ‘Herozia’ in top form as they followed the outsiders into Sunday’s knockouts.

“It’s such a big pleasure and real honour for us to be here. There’s only sixteen teams here, then only eight that will proceed into tomorrow, so it’s a real honour to part of the top eight teams in the world.”

Group D

After KiNG's early stutters, an open race was quickly shut down once they found their rhythm. Ajax looked nailed on to be joining them only to leave the door open for Al Nassr going into the final game of the group, but the Saudi Arabian pair couldn't make their Dutch side's late slips count.

"We had a rough start. In the second game we clutched up and won all nine points, and that had us sitting nice, but it almost went down to goal difference, our last two v two decided it."
