A history of the Blue Stars/FIFA Youth Cup

Founded way back in 1898, FC Blue Stars are a Zurich footballing institution. In 1921, the Blue Stars became one of the first clubs in Switzerland to set up a youth section. Some years later, in December 1938, the club launched the Blue Stars annual tournament.

Not everyone was convinced at the start. The instigators needed all their powers of persuasion to win over an initially sceptical club committee, but the event has grown from humble beginnings and now boasts a long and successful history.

A host of young hopefuls who would later go on to stardom appeared on the world stage for the first time at previous editions of the tournament, including the likes of Nani, Kaka, David Beckham, Paul Scholes and the Neville brothers, Phil and Gary.

Patron role for FIFAFIFA took over as patron of the international junior event in 1991, with the change of name to the current Blue Stars/FIFA Youth Cup following four years later. World football’s governing body and FC Blue Stars Zurich extended their cooperation agreement for the Blue Stars/FIFA Youth Cup through to 2016.

Blatter impressed by global dimensionFIFA President Joseph S. Blatter singled out the tournament’s global appeal for praise: "It is a rendezvous of the best junior teams from every continent. It's the annual get-together no-one wants to miss, and a real festival of football. FIFA will continue to support the organisers and the tournament in Zurich in the future."

This year’s line-up includes FC Blue Stars Zurich, FC Luzern, FC Zurich, Grasshopper Club Zurich (all from Switzerland), Benfica (Portugal), Werder Bremen (Germany), Feyenoord Rotterdam (Netherlands), IFK Goteborg (Sweden), Bursaspor (Turkey) and title holders Clube Atletico Paranaense (Brazil).
