GERMAN

GIANTS FALL

Russia 2018 has seen its first real favourite be eliminated...

After Germany’s shock 1-0 loss against Mexico to open their World Cup defence…

2-1

They seemed to have righted their ship with a last-gasp come from behind win over Sweden.

But a top-drawer Budweiser Man of the Match performance by Korea Republic goalkeeper Jo Hyeonwoo sent the Germans packing 2-0 and out of the event to the shock of the watching world.

Curse of the champions?

Germany become the 3rd straight defending champion to go out in the group stage (after Spain in 2014 and Italy in 2010) and the 4th in the last 5 (France 2002).

This also continues the Confederations Cup Hex in which the winner of the Confed Cup the summer before has never gone on to win the World Cup.

This is the first time Germany have EVER gone out in the group stage, although they were eliminated in a knockout match in the first round in 1938.

SWITZERLAND 1954

Historic exit

The 4-time World Cup champions have been omnipresent in the latter stages of the event since 1954, reaching 8 finals and 12 semi-finals of the last 16 editions before this one.
