DIDIER DESCHAMPS

JOINING THE

MAGIC PODIUM?

On Sunday, the French coach could become the 3rd person to win a FIFA World Cup both on the pitch and in the dugout. We take a look at his potential future... and history.

2

Hall of Fame

In 20 World Cup editions only 2 people have lifted the trophy as a player and coach. But Deschamps (49), who captained France in 1998 to their first and only World Cup title to date, is just 90 minutes away from etching his name into history. Can you name the other two?

El Lobo, as he is known in Brazil, won the World Cup twice as a player (1958, 1962). Just 8 years after his last touch of the World Cup, he once again lifted the trophy by coaching an unforgettable Brazil to victory at Mexico 1970. That winning team is still regarded as one of the most talented to ever play at a World Cup.

MARIO

ZAGALLO

Der Kaiser captained Germany FR to World Cup victory at home in 1974, and after losing the Final at Mexico 1986, redeemed himself by coaching his nation to their 3rd world title in 1990. In Italy, his team didn't lose a single match, scoring 15 goals.

FRANZ

BECKENBAUER

The World Cup love story began with heartbreak for Deschamps. On the pitch, as a defensive midfielder, the Frenchman did not manage to qualify for Italy 1990 nor USA 1994. The infamous final qualification game against Bulgaria - which included a 90th minute goal that effectively ended French hopes of a trip to the 1994 World Cup - still hurts that generation.

  • Lifted the trophy after beating Brazil 3-0 in the 1998 World Cup Final

At his return to the World Cup (Brazil 2014) Deschamps, this time as a coach, led France to the quarter-finals. Eventual champions Germany proved too strong, winning 1-0 and sending Les Bleus home. But a young French generation started to forge its character...
