*Qualification history*
A FIFA member since 2005, this tiny nation in south-east Asia is taking part in a FIFA World Cup™ qualifying competition for only the third time. Having lost all four of their previous qualifiers, Timor-Leste have already broken new ground in the AFC preliminaries for Russia 2018, beating Mongolia in the first round. There was to be no continuation of the fairytale for the islanders though, as they finished bottom of Group A in Round 2. They did have some positive performances though, including a pair of 1-1 draws - one against Malaysia, the other against Palestine - which they will use as building blocks when qualifying begins for Qatar 2022.
