After collecting a runners-up medal at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Colombia 2011, Mario Rui made the move to Italy, where he has spent most of his professional career. The left-back had a superb season on loan at Napoli, prompting Portugal coach Fernando Santos to hand him his first senior cap in March 2018, when he came off the substitutes' bench to replace Fabio Coentrao.
Thanks to his excellent performances on the left flank, Rui has gone straight from a warm-up match to the FIFA World Cup™. “It’s very hard to describe. I feel so proud,” said the player after receiving the call from Santos.
