2014 FIFA World Cup™

Volunteer Programme receives 37,000 applications in 24 hours

In the opening 24 hours of the application period, the Volunteer Programme for the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 and the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ received 37,000 applications spanning 69 different nations. In the case of Brazil, applications have come not just from those hailing in the 12 Host Cities, but from all the federation’s 26 states as well as the Federal District. The state which has provided the largest number of candidates so far is Sao Paulo (10,955), followed by Rio de Janeiro (6,016) and Minas Gerais (3,652).

“We appealed to the people of Brazil and the entire world to use the Volunteer Programme to fully embrace the FIFA Confederations Cup and the FIFA World Cup, and that’s happened right from the first day,” said Ronaldo, a member of the Management Board of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil LOC™. “We’re extremely happy.”

The LOC was also able to celebrate the numbers of those wishing to volunteer for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013, with 80 per cent of those candidates applying to help at the 2014 FIFA World Cup also willing to do their bit at the previous year’s competition.

“This level of demand shows how much respect people have for the values that characterise both voluntary work and Brazil: joy, dedication and altruism,” said the LOC’s head of the Volunteer Programme, Rodrigo Hermida. “Receiving 37,000 applications in the first 24 hours makes us confident that the LOC’s Volunteer Programme will be a success.”

At this stage it is forecast that some 7,000 volunteers will take part in next year’s FIFA Confederations Cup, with 15,000 helping out at Brazil 2014. Following the initial 15-day application period, the number of applications will be counted, with the LOC’s technical team then making a decision on whether to extend the recruitment period or not.
