USA trade mission analyses 2010 FIFA World Cup™


The 2010 FIFA World Cup™ means more to the host country than playing host to a 64-game tournament. There is a great benefit for many facets of South Africa. Tourism increases, infrastructure is improved and there are many business opportunities that spring up, helping to improve the South African economy greatly.

The USA, to try and gauge the potential for business partnerships around the 2010 FIFA World Cup, has sent a delegation to South Africa. The delegation included Milwaukee Senator Stanley Rosenberg as well as New York Assembly Chairman of the Committee on Economic Development, Robin Schimminger. They were escorted to the country by South Africa's Consul General to the USA, Fikile Magubane, whose office is based in New York. For them this was the perfect time to come on a fact finding mission to ascertain what economic partnerships, based around the 2010 FIFA World Cup, could be brokered.

"It [South Africa] is a country with a lot of ambition and energy, which are two things that we Americans value. This definitely holds promise for collaboration in many spheres, including economic and cultural" stated Senator Rosenberg.

The delegation was impressed by a presentation given by the Organising Committee (OC) which covered everything from the stadia to safety and security issues. "It's going to be amazing" mentioned Senator Rosenberg as he was taken through the process of hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

"The bringing of such a large number of people both during 2010 and in the run-up means that the opportunity is there" mentioned Schimminger when asked about his thoughts on the economic benefit of hosting an event of this magnitude.

The US delegation visited many of the areas in South Africa that will play host to the 2010 FIFA World Cup including Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Rustenburg.
