Yann Sommer is relieved to be switching off from Borussia Monchengladbach’s struggles and insistent Switzerland will not underestimate Faroe Islands in 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ qualifying. Gladbach finished fourth in the 2015/16 Bundesliga, but a run of just two points from five games – all of which they failed to score in – has plummeted them to 11th.

“It’s a bit difficult at the club right now – we haven’t won much lately,” said the 27-year-old goalkeeper. “I’m really glad to be here. I can speak Swiss again. The Nati is always a welcome change of scenery for me.”

His country’s form is contrasting to his club’s. Vladimir Petkovic’s side sit top of Group B in Russia 2018 qualifying, having won all three of their matches – 2-0 at home to Portugal, 3-2 away to Hungary and 2-1 in Andorra. Switzerland entertain Faroe Islands, who have claimed four points from a possible nine, on Sunday.

“The Faroe Islands will make life really difficult for us,” warned Sommer. “They are a very compact and aggressive team. We prepare ourselves for each opponent with the same seriousness. We’re taking the Faroes very seriously.”

Switzerland have participated in ten World Cups, including the last three.
