New Arena da Amazonia work to start in April

Work continues apace on what will be one of planet football’s most significant new stadiums, the Arena da Amazonia, located deep in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest. The venue is being purposely built for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ and is due to enter its second phase of construction in April, with the project scheduled to be complete by the first half of 2013.

The placement of the concrete structures for the stands will get underway over the next month. The construction company charged with carrying out the work has already begun the process of manufacturing the 2,500 precast concrete blocks required for the stands. The height of these blocks will vary between 30 and 37 centimetres. The manufacture of a total of 108 inclined girders designed to support the steps in the Arena will also get underway this week.

The earthwork on the site is virtually finished and work on the foundations has already begun, by way of installing continuous helix-shaped supports on one side of the stadium. Work on the opposite side of the stadium is scheduled to begin during the next month.

Work on the stadium has also had an impact on job creation in the civil construction field, with 385 professionals currently working on the project. By the end of this week, 150 more employees will have been taken on, including foremen, carpenters, bricklayers and assistants. This rate of hiring new staff is expected to continue, to the tune of close to 1,000 new professionals during 2011.

Located in the Amazon, Manaus is one of Brazil’s most symbolic cities and the capital of Amazonas state. The city prospered during the Rubber Boom and subsequently following the setting up of the Manaus Free Economic Zone, which led to a variety of electronic goods manufacturers setting up base in the area. Thanks to its involvement in the FIFA World Cup, local football will also receive a boost thanks to the new stadium and the revamping of training pitches.
