The campaign to recruit volunteers for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 and 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ is off to an impressive start with more than 62,500 people applying to participate in the first month alone. The campaign, the biggest in the history of the volunteer movement in Russia, was launched on 1 June by Russian President Vladimir Putin and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Applications will be open at fifa.com/volunteers and via Russia 2018 Volunteer Centres in the 11 Host Cities until the end of 2016.
“I can’t wait for the World Cup in 2018. I’m crazy about football and want to be part of the biggest football celebration in the world,” said Ekaterina Morozova, one of the candidates from Samara. “For me, volunteering is a unique experience, providing unforgettable moments and a chance to see a huge event from within. On top of that, I get to meet people and make friends from all over the world.”
In Russia, the largest number of applications were submitted to volunteer centres in Moscow (15,303) and Saint Petersburg (7,419). The other cities which make up the top five application submission list were Sochi (4,206), Rostov-on-Don (3,070) and Nizhny Novgorod (2,620). So far, 59% of applicants have been women. 79% of applicants are aged 16 to 25, 18% are aged 26 to 40, 1% are aged 41 to 60 and 2% are 60 and older.
“This level of interest in volunteering underscores the importance of the upcoming tournaments and the regard which Russians have for them,” Local Organising Committee Chairman and Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said. “It is also wonderful to see that 16% of the applications come from outside Russia. In total, we have applicants from 175 other countries willing to volunteer, proving that the World Cup transcends borders and is loved and enjoyed around the globe.”
The most popular volunteering areas so far are team services (9,610 applications), ceremonies (5,210 applications) and language services (4,002 applications).
In total, more than 5,500 volunteers will be involved in hosting the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 and 15,000 at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™.
