For the first time in the history of football, the Final of the 2006 FIFA World Cup on July 9 will be played using a ball specially designed for the occasion by adidas. Another first is that the balls used throughout the tournament will feature the name of the stadium, the teams taking part in that particular match, the date and the kick-off time.
On Tuesday 18 April, OC President Franz Beckenbauer and adidas chairman Herbert Hainer officially presented the golden adidas + Teamgeist Berlin Ball, at the Brandenburg gate in Berlin.
"The World Cup Final is the most important match in football. There is nothing greater for a footballer than playing in a World Cup Final," commented Beckenbauer at the presentation in Berlin, where the Final will be staged. "This is why I think that having a special ball just for this match is a great idea."
In reference to the FIFA World Cup Trophy, the dominant colour of the Final ball will be gold.
adidas will be providing 15 official "Teamgeist" balls for each FIFA World Cup match, and a total of 2,880 balls for the entire tournament, which includes the games themselves and the training camps of the 32 teams taking part in the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
