Dempsey sinks Cuba

A goal five minutes from half-time by Clint Dempsey gave the USA victory over Cuba in Havana. Dempsey took advantage of confusion in the Cuban defence to fire home from eight yards, and Bob Bradley's side are now on top of their qualifying group for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.

Elsewhere, Honduras came from behind to defeat their hosts Canada 2-1 in Montreal. A goal from Adrian Serioux gave the Canucks an early lead, but shortly after half-time, Ramon Nunez scored twice for the visitors in quick succession to give the Hondurans their first points in the group.

A hat-trick from Rodolfo Zelaya has helped El Salvador to a crushing 5-0 victory over Haiti at the Cuscatlan stadium. Zelaya scored two goals in the first half and completed his hat-trick early in the second, Cesar Larios and William Torres subsequently completing the rout. The 14th-minute sendoff of Pierre Bruny did not help the Haitians' cause.

There was another dismissal in San Jose, as Costa Rica stormed to a 7-0 demolition of Suriname. Froylan Ledesma got the Ticos on the way with two goals in the first half, and following the dismissal of Rinaldo Lupson for a second bookable offence on 47 minutes, the home side slotted home five more without reply for the biggest win of the round.

Mexico answered their critics by trouncing Jamaica 3-0 at the Estadio Azteca in their qualifier. Andres Guardado set the hosts on the way with a magnificent left-footed free kick in only the 3rd minute, and the hosts went further ahead on 33 minutes with a goal from Fernando Arce. Jonny Magallon put the seal on the win for the hosts, with a fine volley to make it 3-0 shortly after the hour.

Trinidad and Tobago were held to a home draw by Guatemala in the opening game of the North, Central America and Caribbean zone's second matchday of group stage qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. Keon Daniel put the hosts in front in the 84th minute, but a goal from defencer Carlos Santizo in injury time gave the Chapines a vital away point.

Trinidad and Tobago 1-1 Guatemala
Mexico 3-0 Jamaica
Cuba 0-1 USA
Canada 1-2 Honduras
El Salvador 5-0 Haiti
