Russia head coach Stanislav Cherchesov has signed a new contract with 2018 FIFA World Cup™ hosts Russia, which could see him lead the team until 2022.

Following the hosts' run to the quarter-finals, where they were knocked out in the quarter-finals to eventual finalists Croatia after a narrow 4-3 penalty shootout defeat, Cherchesov has been given an extension to his contract by the Russian Football Association.

The agreement is for Cherchesov to coach the national team for two more years, but it will be extended for a further two more years if the team succeeds in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2020.

“I'm happy to continue working with Russia," Cherchesov said on the Russian Football Union's official website. "We set the bar quite high in terms of results, but we will try to keep this up. I understand the responsibility and will continue to work with dignity."

Cherchesov was recently announced as a nominee for The Best FIFA Men's Coach Award 2018 alongside Zlatko Dalic, Roberto Martinez, Didier Deschamps, Pep Guardiola, Massimiliano Allegri, Ernesto Valverde, Jurgen Klopp, Gareth Southgate, Diego Simeone and Zinedine Zidane.
