Cahill boost for Socceroos

Australia have received a boost for their crucial upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ qualifier against Oman with Tim Cahill returning after a six-match absence.

The talismanic Socceroos midfielder has not featured since grabbing a decisive equaliser against Iraq last year in a 2-1 win, that heped lift Holger Osieck’s side into the second and final automatic qualifying position behind Japan in Group B.

Cahill, who late last year departed Everton for New York Red Bulls, famously scored Australia’s maiden goal at a FIFA World Cup seven years ago in Germany.

Other returnees in Osieck’s 23-strong squad are Mile Jedinak, Tommy Oar and new Celtic signing Tom Rogic.

Central defender Dino Djulbic has received his second call-up after making his senior international debut at the EAFF East Asian Cup qualifiers in Hong Kong last December.

The A-League has six representatives in stand-out goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic (Adelaide United), Mark Milligan (Melbourne Victory), Jade North (Brisbane Roar), Mat Ryan (Central Coast Mariners), Archie Thompson (Melbourne Victory) and Michael Thwaite (Perth Glory).

On the debit side for Australia, skipper Lucas Neill and midfield anchor Carl Valeri will both be absent with suspension.

Oman are level with Australia on points, but behind the Socceroos and third-placed Iraq on goal difference.

Jordon on four points will host runaway leaders Japan in another crucial match-up.

The most recent meeting between Australia and Oman was in Muscat last June where they played out a hard-fought scoreless stalemate.
