Matthaus’s funny Final fear

Italy 1990

"I was afraid of dropping the Trophy"

Lothar Matthaus was frightened at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome in 1990 – not of facing Diego Maradona, who he raves about, but of the FIFA World Cup™ Trophy. “I was afraid of dropping it!” he admitted.

In that Final, Matthaus revealed, “I was having some problems with my boots. The sole cracked and I had to play the second half with completely new boots.”

Fortunately, it was like a home game for West Germany: “The Italians were supporting Germany, since Argentina had knocked Italy out in the semi-finals, and Diego Maradona wasn't exactly popular in Rome either.”

In a candid chat with FIFA.com, Matthaus also discusses feeling sorry for England’s Chris Waddle and other defeated opponents, and his World Cup legacy.

The Interview

"When Waddle blasted the decisive penalty over the bar, I didn't join in the celebrations with the rest of the German team. I went over to console him instead. I couldn't help him, but I felt really sorry for him."
