THE ROAD

TO FRANCE

Norway beat reigning UEFA Women’s EURO champions the Netherlands to claim top spot in Group C of the European qualifiers. It all came down to a last-day meeting between the two sides, a game the Norwegians had to win to claim the automatic qualification slot, with goals from Ingrid Engen and Isabell Herlovsen ensuring that they did so.

THE COACH

Martin Sjogren

Though it is no easy task to follow in the footsteps of a legend, Martin Sjogren had no hesitation in taking over from Even Pellerud, the man who guided Norway to the world title in 1995. Appointed in December 2016, the Swede presided over a disappointing display at Women’s EURO 2017, but got Norway back on track in the France 2019 qualifiers.

THE STAR

Maren Mjelde

A feature of the Norway side for more than a decade, Maren Mjelde is the soul of the team and its mastermind. Capable of playing in central defence, as a defensive midfielder or a playmaker, her vision, dead-ball skills, and charisma are key assets for Norway.

See you

in France 2019
