THE ROAD

TO FRANCE

Having negotiated the group phase of this year’s African finals without too much trouble, Cameroon once again came up short against Nigeria, their conquerors in the last two finals, in the last four. That left the Indomitable Lionesses facing Mali in the match for third place, with a ticket to France 2019 at stake, and they responded by claiming a stirring 4-2 win.

THE COACH

Alain Djeumfa

Alain Djeumfa was appointed national coach in January 2019, having acted as fitness coach under predecessor Joseph Ndoko, who led the team through their 2019 Women’s World Cup qualification campaign. Djeumfa, who has previously coached several top-flight club teams in Cameroon, will be assisted in France by former Indomitable Lionesses' captain Bernadette Anong.

THE STAR

Gabrielle Onguene

Onguene announced herself on the global stage with some excellent performances at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada, where she helped her team to reach the Round of 16 for the first time. Since then, the attacking midfielder has blossomed into one of Africa's top players, and scored a crucial goal against Mali to ensure Cameroon’s qualification for France 2019.
