Morgan joins century club

  • USA’s Alex Morgan scores her 100th international goal

  • Seventh USA player to achieve the feat

  • World champs begin their title defence in just over two months

USA striker Alex Morgan netted her 100th international goal on Thursday as the world champions survived a scare to prevail with an action-packed 5-3 win over Australia in Colorado.

The Stars and Stripes needed to come from 2-1 behind early in the second half to ensure the headlines were all about Morgan, after her impressive solo opener got the scoring underway.

Morgan collected the ball near halfway before dribbling towards goal and coolly slotting home in the 14th minute.

With 159 appearances to her credit, Morgan’s 100th goal came just over nine years since making her debut for the senior USA national team.

She is the seventh Stars and Stripes’ player to reach the landmark, with the list headlined by Abby Wambach (184 goals) and Mia Hamm (158).

USA have never lost an international in the 70 matches in which Morgan has found the net.

USA will open their FIFA Women’s World Cup™ title defence against Thailand in Reims on 11 June, before further Group F outings against Chile and Sweden.
