Janine Helland, a two-time FIFA Women's World Cup footballer and current member of the National Organising Committee for Canada 2015, has been selected for induction to The Soccer Hall of Fame in Canada. Helland will become an honoured member this 1 June 2013.

Ms. Helland represented Canada at the FIFA Women's World Cup at Sweden 1995 and USA 1999. She served as Canada's captain at USA 1999.

“This is an honour that I never would have imagined,” said Janine Helland. “I had the great fortune to play for Canada with incredible players and for dedicated, passionate coaches. To be recognized individually like this is unbelievable but the credit has to go to my coaches and teammates who without them, I wouldn't have had the privilege to play in the two FIFA Women’s World Cups and many other competitions that I did."

Also a two-time winner of the Jubilee Trophy (Canadian national championship) and one-time winner of the Gladys Bean Trophy (Canadian university championship), Helland was Canada Soccer's Player of the Year for 1997. Just last year, she was named to the All-Time Canada XI team as part of the Canadian Soccer Association's Centennial Celebrations.

Since hanging up her boots, Helland has played an important part in helping to develop the women’s game. She has served as a member on the Committee for Women’s Football and has served on Organising Committees for the FIFA Women’s World Cup China 2007 and Germany 2011, as well as the inaugural FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup New Zealand 2008.

Helland is now charged with helping bring the two biggest women’s football tournaments – the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2014 and FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015 – to Canada.
