The first FIFA Women’s World Cup™ match to go to extra time was the quarter-final between Denmark and Germany on 24 November 1991 – with the latter running out 2-1 winners.

A few hours later in Jiangmen, a second match went to extra time between Norway and Italy. The Scandinavians edged the Italians 3-2. In 1991, not a single match needed to be decided on penalties.
