2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup hosts Papua New Guinea have won through to Oceania’s play-off final against New Zealand for the right to participate at next year’s Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in Rio.

A 3-0 semi-final victory over Samoa on Monday saw the hosts of the XV Pacific Games win their way through to Thursday's gold medal match against New Caledonia who defeated Cook Islands 5-1, setting up a repeat of the Pacific Games final in Noumea four years ago. The results guaranteed PNG’s progression to the play-off later this year with New Caledonia not participating in the Olympic Games as a separate entity.

Papua New Guinea are traditionally the strongest women’s football nation among Pacific Islands' nations having won the three Pacific Games competitions held to date, as well as finishing runners-up in the OFC Women’s Championship on three occasions.
