France booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Women's Olympic Football Tournament with a straightforward 3-0 victory over New Zealand at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador.

Eugenie Le Sommer pounced to put Les Bleues ahead in the first period, before Louisa Cadamuro's second-half header and penalty sealed the victory. The win saw Philippe Bergeroo's side finish second ahead of the Football Ferns in Group G, and the Oceania outfit await the results of Group E's games to see if they will progress or go home.

The opening half-hour was a fairly tense affair, with both sides creating little of note in terms of chances. A penetrative run by Sakina Karchaoui ended up not troubling Kiwi goalkeeper Erin Nayler, but it was a sign of growing French pressure that would result in the opener.

Elise Bussaglia picked the ball up midway between the centre circle and the New Zealand penalty area, got her head up and hit an audacious effort from distance. Nayler backpedalled, but could only tip the ball onto her left-hand post. The rebound fell kindly to Le Sommer, who made no mistake in firing home.

Into the second half, France took control of the game, dictating the tempo of the match. New Zealand's only response was a promising run by Annalie Longo, which included a couple of stepovers, but the No16's shot was tame and wide.

*Les Bleues *made their dominance count by doubling their advantage through Cadamuro. The electric Elodie Thomis burst down the right and delivered a delicious cross, which the France No14 duly dispatched with a stooping header.

Cadamuro scored her second, and France's third, with a late penalty which she dispatched coolly past Nayler.

The win sees Philippe Bergeroo's side through to the last eight, with Tony Readings' side facing a wait to see if they will join their European opponents and USA in progressing to the knockout stage from Group G.
