The Official Emblem of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ was launched today in a ceremony held at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen (Germany), under the Chairmanship of the FIFA President, Joseph S. Blatter, and the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™, Franz Beckenbauer.
The motto of the 18th FIFA World Cup™ will be the celebration of friendships, with the Official Emblem illustrating the joy on the faces of three friends as they spontaneously celebrate a perfect football moment.
“Thinking back to the 2002 FIFA World Cup™ in Asia, I remember the smiling faces of fans, cheering enthusiastically for their team in the stadiums and on the streets. The Official Emblem of the 2006 FIFA World™ depicts these emotions perfectly - the happiness, joy and excitement that fans feel when watching FIFA World Cup™ matches,” said FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter.
Franz Beckenbauer added, “We want to be friendly hosts and celebrate a party with the entire world. Our logo expresses the relaxed, cheerful character of the upcoming FIFA World Cup™.”
One unique feature of the Official Emblem is the inclusion of the trophy design that was the central element of the Official Emblem of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™. Whilst the core design of the 2002 Emblem has been included in the 2006 Emblem, the oriental elements of the 2002 Emblem have been removed. Whitestone International, led by Chris Lightfoot who was also in charge of the 2002 Emblem, designed the 2006 Emblem in collaboration with Abolt GmbH, the official design agency of the Local Organising Committee.
