- Lao National Day’s Football Championship a big hit in Laos
- The 54-match championship funded through FIFA's COVID-19 Relief Plan
- USD 400,000 covered logistical and competition operations and COVID protocols
The Lao Football Federation (LFF) has staged a successful Lao National Day’s Football Championship, which saw 18 provinces across the country competing for the title.
The competition, which celebrates the anniversary of the Lao People Democratic Republic's establishment, was funded by USD 400,000 from the FIFA COVID-19 Relief Plan, covering the expenses of logistics and competition operations in addition to the COVID-19 medical protocols.
The tournament was staged over a period of 16 days, which culminated in Champasak Province winning the men’s competition after a penalty shootout against Luangprabang Province, and Vientiane Capital defeating Xiengkhouang Province after extra time in the women's final.
The 54 matches played across the competition generated major interest from football fans throughout the provinces in Laos, spurring the LFF to continue their support for provincial football.
At the end of July, FIFA’s ground-breaking COVID-19 Relief Plan was approved by the Bureau of the FIFA Council. Under the terms of the Relief Plan, USD 1.5 billion is being made available to support all 211 FIFA member associations and the six confederations in alleviating of the pandemic's financial impact.
