FIFA publishes first annual Players’ Status report

  • Record 9,534 cases and applications received from 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020

  • Most applications related to the registration of minors (5,487)

  • Players’ Status Department brought about an unprecedented “inbox zero”

FIFA has today published for the first time the annual report of the Players’ Status Department.

The FIFA Players’ Status Department Report 2019/2020 provides a comprehensive overview of the department’s activities during the period from 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020.

During that time, FIFA’s Players’ Status Department received a record 9,534 cases and applications, divided in two main categories: dispute proceedings, and registration and eligibility matters. By far the most applications received related to the registration of minors (5,487), while the bulk of dispute proceedings (2,752 cases) were decided by the Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC).

Decisions resulting from the department’s activities increased on average by 150% year-on-year (Q1 2019 to Q1 2020), with a particularly impressive jump in the number of solidarity mechanism and training compensation cases resolved (+234%) and strong progress in the conclusion of contractual disputes through both the DRC and the Players’ Status Committee (PSC) and disputes regarding overdue payables.

The report also documents FIFA’s elimination of a backlog of pending cases that had swelled to 1,560 as recently as January 2019. By the end of the reporting period (June 2020), the Players’ Status Department had brought about a practically unprecedented “inbox zero”, with no cases pending for more than four months and the capacity to process new cases as they come in.

The new report is part of FIFA’s push towards greater transparency and full disclosure of its core activities, including legal processes..
