Chile's passionate fans roared their heroes into the Round of 16 as they recorded their second 3-0 win of the tournament, this time against Congo at Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton on 5 July, 2007.
Congo started well but in the 22nd minute their defender Yann Combo was shown a straight red card for a stiff challenge on Dagoberto Currimilla. Alexis Sanchez was guilty of an amazing first-half miss when Congo goalkeeper Destin Onka inexplicably passed the ball straight to the Chilean striker, who floated it towards an unguarded net but his effort passed high and wide. A low drive by Sanchez in the 49th minute made up for that as Chile took control of an entertaining game by going ahead.
Chile's Mathias Vidangossy poked the ball against the post before Nicolas Medina made it two with a thumping left-footer in the 75th minute and a curling drive by Arturo Vidal from 25 yards wrapped things up eight minutes from time. Safely through, Chile are now returning once more to Toronto where they meet Austria on 8 July, while Congo hope to add to their solitary Group A point as they remain in Edmonton for a meeting with host nation Canada on the same date.
