Group D: Title favourites prevail, debutants surprise
Group D began with a reprising of the 2010 and 2014 finals between Nigeria and Germany. Both those games had been won by the Europeans and that outcome did not change this time around.
In the end, regular tournament participants Germany and Nigeria reached the quarter-finals, even if the West Africans left it very late in their last group match against China PR to advance.

The Nigeria centre-back plays a crucial role for her team. Because of her strength in the air, she is not only an important part of the defence, but also very dangerous when it comes to corner kicks and set-pieces in attack.
"I knew before the game how good Nerilia Mondesir was. She really impressed me. She’s a world-class player and you can see that she plays in one of the best leagues in the world.
China PR coach Peter Bonde
Germany were the only team to complete the group stage with three wins and a maximum nine points.
