*THE DAY REPLAYED - *Spain finally brought an end to their long winless run against Japan on Tuesday. Having suffered a string of defeat at the hands of the Japanese at U-17 level at Costa Rica 2014 and Jordan 2016, La Rojita finally gained revenge courtesy of Maria Caldentey’s late penalty. In the other match in Group B, meanwhile, Nigeria came from behind to down Canada 3-1.

Over in Group A, Korea DPR became the first team to progress to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016 when they beat Brazil 4-2. Beaten heavily in their opening game, hosts Papua New Guinea showed some encouraging signs in a 6-0 defeat to Sweden.

Nigeria 3-1 Canada

Goal of the day Maria Caldentey, Spain 1-0 Japan, 81
*Coming, as it did, against their bogey team, Spain had good reason to celebrate Maria Caldentey’s coolly taken penalty. Though she started the game on the bench, *La Rojita’s
matchwinner kept her cool when it mattered: “I’m not the kind of player who gets nervous in that kind of situation. I just put it where I normally do,” she told FIFA.com afterwards.

Memorable momentsPower shift: Spain’s Nahikari Garcia and Japan’s Hina Sugita know each other well, having faced off twice at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica 2014, where they captained their sides and where Sugita won the adidas Golden Ball in helping her side to the title. They crossed paths again on Tuesday, both in No7 shirts, with the Spaniard this time winning the day and marking her team’s superiority by skipping past her opposite number in the closing stages.

A welcome shower: Heat has been an important factor in the tournament so far, impacting on the pace of play and causing the players to take essential water breaks. The mercury soared once more during Spain’s match with Japan at Bava Park, where temperatures hit 38.9°C. There was a pleasant surprise in store for the substitutes as they went through their half-time training routines, however, as the sprinkler system came on, giving them some respite from the punishing conditions.

*A champion stirs: *Nigeria have grown accustomed to playing a prominent role in both men’s and women’s FIFA youth tournaments. Runners-up at Canada 2014, the African side nevertheless seemed bound for an early exit from Papua New Guinea 2016, having lost their opening match to Japan and then falling behind to Canada. An impressive three-goal fightback ensured they kept their qualification hopes alive, however.

The stat4 - In helping herself to four goals against the hosts, Sweden’s Stina Blackstenius opened her tournament account in style after drawing a blank against Korea DPR. The leading scorer in the European qualifiers, Blackstenius is the fourth player in the history of the tournament to score four goals in a single match, after Christine Sinclair in 2002, Kim Un-Hwa in 2012 and Asisat Oshoala in 2014.

The words“It was a very tough match between two evenly matched teams. Spain played very fast and we weren’t able to control the game with our short passing as much as we would have liked.” Japan coach Asako Takakura
