Mexico win thrilling opener over Brazil

A pair of second-half goals from Jacqueline Ovalle gave Mexico a 3-2 win over Group B rivals Brazil in a thrilling opening match of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018 in Dinan-Lehon on Sunday afternoon.

In beautiful and sunny conditions at the Stade du Clos Gastel, it was Mexico’s Katty Martinez that scored the first goal of France 2018 on just four minutes. She latched on to Daniela Espinoza’s through ball before rounding Brazil goalkeeper Kemelli and slotting into an empty net.

That lead lasted just two minutes, however, as the dangerous Kerolin Nicoli scored the first of two first-half goals to make it 1-1. She then put the South American champions into the lead with a fine right-footed finish on 17 minutes after taking a pass from Victoria in the Mexico box.

Brazil’s first-half dominance merited more than the two goals they scored. They would relinquish their advantage shortly after half-time, as Ovalle powered home a fine strike to pull Mexico back on level terms before scoring El Tri’s winner from a goalmouth scramble in Brazil’s six-yard box.

The Brazilians had a chance to earn a draw from the penalty spot in stoppage time, but Victoria’s spot-kick struck the crossbar. It meant Mexico held on for a first-ever victory over Brazil in this competition.
