Korea Republic strike early to secure advancement

  • Commanding first half helps Korea Republic beat Chile 2-1

  • Taeguk Warriors earn Round of 16 berth

  • Chile also advance thanks to Netherlands-USA result

Paik Sanghoon scored 51 seconds into the match as Korea Republic held off Chile 2-1 to snag a last-16 place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Brazil 2019™. Sanghoon's goal was the fifth-quickest in the history of the competition, and Hong Sungwook added another at the half-hour.

This was a deserved result for the Koreans, who ambushed Chile inside the first minute and continued to overpower their competition with quick, technical play. Both of the Taeguk Warrior's goals came from corner kicks. They outshot La Rojita 10-3 in the first half and 18-8 overall. Now Korea Republic will prepare for a 5 November date with Angola in the Round of 16, a side not short on agility.

It wasn't until the 24th minute that Chile registered their first shot attempt. Alex Oroz fired La Rojita back into contention four minutes before half-time, against the run of play. They put Korea Republic on their heels searching for the equaliser at the end of the match, but their efforts fell short. Chile still booked a place in the knockout phase after the Netherlands' 4-0 win over USA wasn't quite enough to vault them ahead of the South Americans.
