Chile see off Haiti in six-goal thriller

  • Chile collect three crucial points against winless Haiti

  • South Americans never headed after taking early lead

  • Chile now sit second in Group D with Haiti on the bottom

Chile outlasted Haiti to revive their Brazil 2019 campaign with an action-packed and at-times physical 4-2 win in Goiania on Wednesday. The South Americans took an early lead and were never behind although they were briefly pegged back during the first half, and were pushed to the limit by a dynamic Haiti. The result sees Chile leapfrog into second in Group C ahead of Korea Republic on goal difference, while Haiti will need a victory in their final outing against France on Saturday.

Having been kept scoreless by a strong France side in their opener, Chile will be pleased with their goalscoring output against Haiti. Chile scored twice in each half and, although goalscoring attempts were alike, it was the South Americans who created far more gilt-edged openings. Gonzalo Tapia was their most dangerous outlet netting a goal, providing an assist and forcing an own goal.

Although outclassed at times, Haiti again displayed their attacking prowess which caused the Chile defence numerous headaches. There was no shortage of endeavour even if they were disjointed in possession on occasions. Haiti’s defence proved porous and they were reduced to ten men in the final minutes with the dismissal of Samuel Jeanty, with the defender to miss the final group match.
